Sharing News With Kids

The missing plane MH-370 is a big mystery and the whole world is talking about it. 43 ships, 59 aircrafts, 15 nations are in search from fortnight, but can’t find a trace of this aircraft till now. Everybody is curious to know what happened to the aircraft and worried about the safety of 239 passengers.

How difficult it must have been for the families of those passengers to be patient in this difficult time. When I am not related to any of the passengers, I am feeling so tensed for all of them as well as their relatives. It’s even tough to imagine what they might be going through.

Every day a new theory is developed and speculations are made for their fate. Some are making funny remarks like Pakistan must have hidden the plane like they hid Bin Laden, we may soon find Asian Bermuda triangle and some are confident that the plane must have been crashed in the sea that’s why no traces have been found so far.

We discussed a lot on this missing plane at home and that has aroused kids’ curiosity as well. Normally I avoid telling them about general bad news as their little minds can’t comprehend why it’s so bad with the families. They think it’s normal for the planes to go missing. It must be fun for passengers to fly in the air for so long. My daughter is always curious about planes and was following up on this news closely with us. Every day when I come from office the first questions that she asks is the whereabouts of the plane and their passengers. As the days passed she became more and more tensed and I felt guilty about telling her all this. Maybe it’s too early for her to know about the world’s cruel realities. Yesterday, I even saw her praying for those 239 passengers. It touched me and also worried me on how much she will be affected if we hear a bad news. Every passing day, the chances of survival seem to be less.

But then on second thoughts what is the right time for kids to be prepared to be exposed to such facts? The answer is that there is no right age for this. We parents will never feel that our kids are big enough to understand the world.

Though we always try to create a rosy world for them, we shouldn’t forget that life has its own set of ups and downs. Our kids should understand and be prepared to take these harsh realities. They should understand that –

• Life is not always fair. Bad things do happen even to good people.
• There is a sliver line after each cloud. Never lose hope in difficult circumstances.
• Don’t worry over things you can’t control. Live in today. Your present happiness will definitely make a brighter future.
• Always help the needy. If physically you can’t be there to help, keep them in your prayers. Good vibes always give peace to worrying mind.
