A Unique Father’s Day Gift

Tomorrow is Father’s Day and we all are very excited to celebrate a day for a person whose presence and support is the backbone of our life. His love and care are the greatest gifts of God. According to Wikipedia, Father’s Day is a celebration honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, though it is also celebrated widely on other days by many other countries.

“A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.”

When it comes to perfect gift selection, I think that expressing your feeling with a handmade gift is the best choice. It will be the most precious thing that anyone can receive at a special moment. On this special occasion of Father’s Day, I want to share a unique gift that my daughters have made for their dear dad.

It was 1 year ago when my husband moved to the USA from India to complete a software project. I stayed back in India with the kids for their exam sessions. It was a difficult time for us and the children missed their Papa so much!

They missed each moment of happiness and togetherness. After some time, it was time for Father’s Day and they wanted to do something special for their dear Dad. So I asked them, “Why not make a ‘missing’ diary for him? It will be a precious gift filled with all the tiny moments that you want to share with him. We decided to make a unique gift, with the following method.

Supplies

1. Empty old folder
2. Washi tape
3. Some pictures (cut from old magazines or newspapers)
4. Glue and scissors
5. Decorative lace
6. Lots of emotion and imagination.

Method

1. First, I got them to narrate all the moments and feelings that they were missing. Then they wrote these messages in an attractive manner (of course, with my help)

These were the messages:

a. Some days are good, some days are bad but some days are ‘difficult’, especially those days when we are far from those who we love so much and without whom we cannot live. So we (Angel and Pranjal) thought, we should share some memories of the days without you.

b. Dear Papa, the day when you went, we were feeling so alone and crying also. We were missing playing with you, doing household work with you, your help and guidance.
c. We miss going to the park with you, visiting the zoo with you.

d. Then we went to Pune. Nana-Nani were there. We played with them. It was raining; we sailed our paper boat in the water. But still, we were missing you.
e. Then again we came to Nagpur, started going to school. And waiting to come to you.

f. Finally, the day came when we were also flying and dreaming this may be our new house. We will be happy again.

g. Papa, we love you so much. We cannot live with you. You are most wonderful dad in the world.

2. After completing all messages, we collected some beautiful pictures from old magazines to narrate the story in a thoughtful way.
3. Next, we glued all the pictures with the message and punch it in an empty folder.
4. Finally, decorate the cover page with washi tape and decorative lace.
5. ‘Missing diary’, a unique gift was ready.

After 3 months, when we moved to the USA, my daughters had given the prettiest gift to their Papa. And he had the tear of happiness in his eyes. It was really the most unique gift that he had ever received. Have you made a missing diary for your dear one? Do share with us. Once again, Happy Father’s Day to all!
