Ten Things Only A New Mother Knows

Dear mothers, do you know that strength of emotions that grip you when the doctor confirms your first pregnancy?

I bet you know every tiny detail about your child’s school – from the teacher’s husband’s profession to the school bus driver’s home town. Most of the mothers also know the pain of that dreaded first-attempt to walk after that C-Section that made you wished you’d die. But there are certain things that only a new mother knows. Every mother knows these things, but we are human beings after all, and we tend to forget little things as time passes and as our children grow up.

Here are ten things that only a new mother knows:

  1. No matter how deep in sleep your baby looks, she will wake up the moment you put her down in her cot. Yes, she will only sleep in your lap.
  2. There is no such thing as good television – especially when you need it.
  3. White clothes are a privilege.
  4. 3am. And 4am. Know those hours?
  5. Not only fries and burgers, but even mangoes and greek yogurt goes straight to your thighs.
  6. Reading books is a luxury.
  7. Child and Parenting magazines with cute calm content babies on the cover pages are obviously photo shopped. (How else are those pictures possible?)
  8. Mosquitoes are the enemy of mankind. And that various kinds of anti mosquito sprays, roll ons, patches and gels used together makes the baby smell weird but has no effect on the mosquitoes.
  9. It’s bad idea to hug-crush the baby when she’s sleep smiling in her typical incredibly cute way.
  10. Everyone in the world has answers to why the baby is crying – and how much self control it requires to not snap back and just smile instead.

There are other things like how baby poop can reach every corner of the house, and how it is impossible to wash dried baby food off your hair – but then the list would never end!

What is your addition to my list, new mothers?

Aditi Mathur was born on Feb the 14th and since then it has all been awkward for her. A strong believer of “Whatever!”, an ex-advertising girl, a once-upon-a-time blogger, an out-of-place Army Wife and a real-life social person, she has now given up everything for her adorable almost-nine-months old daughter Gauri (Um, also for Twitter, actually). Stalk her at http://damonologue.blogspot.com or  @adicrazy on Twitter. Or Not. Whatever.

  • Ha ha brought back memories! I don’t know why but when I was reading point 7, it reminded me of how they used to show kids growing up in 70s films….while running. Ha ha if children grew up just like that. It wouldn’t be much fun either.

  • Loved the list…I am sure every mom can add more inputs to this list 🙂
